Colonel James "Jim" SchirmerProgram Manager, Armored Fighting Vehicles
COL Jim Schirmer was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1969. He subsequently lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Kennewick, Washington before graduating from High School in Folsom, California. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1991 and was commissioned as an Armor Officer.
COL Schirmer served in Schweinfurt Germany a Tank Platoon Leader, Scout Platoon Leader, and a Tank Company Executive Officer from 1992 through 1994. His next assignment was with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas from 1995-1999. There he then served as an Assistant Brigade Operations Officer, C/3-8 CAV. COL Schirmer also commanded the 1st Cavalry Division’s Headquarters Company during their deployment to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Forge from 1998-1999.
COL Schirmer joined the Army Acquisition Corps in 1999. His initial acquisition assignment was as a Test Officer with Operational Test Command at Fort Hood, Texas. There he planned and executed operational tests for the M2A3 Bradley (IOTE), the TOW Fire and Forget missile system, and the Modular Lightweight Load-bearing Equipment (MOLLE). After attending graduate school at the University of Texas and the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth Kansas, he served as an APM with the Project Manager Stryker Brigade Combat Team where he managed the Mortar and Anti-tank platforms. In 2007 he was assigned to the TRADOC Capability Manager for the Heavy Brigade Combat Team at Fort Knox Kentucky, where he served as the user’s representative for the Bradley family of vehicles and later for the Abrams tank. In July of 2010 he returned to PM Stryker and assumed duties as the Product Manager for Stryker Fleet, where he helped launch the Double-V Hull version of the Stryker in support of operations inAfghanistan. In 2013 he left the Stryker program to attend the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. COL Schirmer assumed responsibilities as the Project Manager for Armored Fighting Vehicles in July of 2014. PM AFV includes the Bradley Fighting Vehicle program, the Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer program,and the Future Fighting Vehicle program.
His military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and is a Distinguished Graduate of the Army War College. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in International History from West Point, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Masters of Strategic Studies from the U.S.Army War College.
COL Schirmer is married to the former Amanda Atkins of Louisville, Kentucky. They have four sons; Dominic (26), Grant (15), Jack (14), and Kent (10).
